What is the relationship between law and ethics?

This is an essay question. Describe the relationship between law and ethics, and speculate as to why they are lumped together at yahoo answers. Compare and contrast, if it helps your argument, but I’m more interested in the _relationship_ between them than their similarities and differences, or in simple definitions.

What is the source of ethics for law?

what is the relation between the law and ethics?
how is it tied in?
what ethic should the lawmakers and judges adopt?
1st answer:
but what makes them “just and fair”

so you are saying
all morals come from religion and that anyone who doesn’t
have religion has no ethics above the law? I find that ludicrous.

Isn’t having a section called Law and Ethics like having one called Anorexia and Restaurants?

Seriously, I can’t see how Law and Ethics automatically get grouped together. The law *may* be ethical, and ethics *may* be enshrined in law, but the law is very often the opposite of ethical and much that can be considered ethical may even be illegal. What’s the thinking behind this connection?
