Why does politics make so many incapable of critical thought?

politics
smoogs asked:

Why do so many people allow themselves to be completely blinded by partisan politics? It seems as if many people lose their ability to use any critical thinking whatsoever during times of elections, and they allow themselves to be dragged along by politicians’ false words.

So many people buy into idiotic attack ads from their favored candidate, and it puzzles me how people can buy into such nonsense without doing some fact checking.

Is the root problem of Americans not being able to use critical thinking a problem with the education system, such as relying on rote learning, or are humans just naturally biased?

The Rejection of Truth

truth
Micahyah Hawkins asked:

This generation is a generation of “doubters and disbelievers”. We are rejecters of truth.

We weren’t always this way. There was a time when fact was fact and truth was truth. All knew it and, it JUST was. There was a time when a handshake settled a matter and a time when a man’s word was like a seal that was not broken. Who can say, really, when the “doubt” began? We know that it existed in the Messiahs’ time among his very own disciples. Thomas doubted. Being faithless, he had to reach out his hand and put it in the Messiah’s side to actually believe that He had risen from the dead. In John 20:29, the Messiah rebuked Thomas and said, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.” Clouded by his doubt and disbelief, Thomas could not recognize ‘truth’. Neither could the disciples recognize ‘truth as truth’. They too were given a verbal spanking for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they did not believe those who had seen the Messiah after He had been raised up. He said, “He who does not believe will be condemned”. (Mark 16:16)

Truth has never changed. Truth demolishes doubt, crushes confusion and destroys disbelief. Truth can stand on its own. It doesn’t need us to stand back and leer at it from around some corner and make questionable comments like: “What’s your angle”? “Can I get that in writing”? “What’s in it for you”? “Is someone paying you to say that”? “What’s the catch”? “How much money are you making from this”? “Is this some kind of joke”?

Our generation can’t accept fact for fact or truth for truth. Instead, we make attempts to scale the firm foundation of truth and overthrow it through riotous thoughts and senseless imaginations. It’s sad, really. A long time ago, people believed that what was written in the Holy Bible WAS truth. Had a question, the bible had the answer. Needed advice or a problem solved, the bible had the answer. No one dared doubt the bible. They didn’t have to because truth was truth. People didn’t need historical records or archaeological finds or historic relics to tell them that the bible was true. They just knew it because truth stands on its own and cannot be refuted. Accounts of heroism, victory, freedom, valor, emancipation, slavery, defeat, war, peace, famine, pride, disbelief…yes, the bible has given an account for everything mankind has and will go through during his brief life under the sun. Why doubt now? Maybe, it was our gradual descent into lawlessness or, maybe, it was science or man’s technological advancements that has made us a bit weary of taking truth for truth… (Sigh). We would have to go back to the very beginning when the heavens and the earth were created, and that, my friend, we cannot do. So, Truth, … what IS Truth? Why ask. Go to your bible and just start reading.

Persuasion in Society: Giving What People Want

society
Michael Lee asked:

Persuasion in society has been existent since the very first relationships were built. Persuasion has had a huge role in forming groups and developing collective ideas and attitudes. Its role will continue to influence future societies, as well, based on the united understanding of individuals. Persuasion in society can make or break a group, so you need to know what people want.

Social Influence

Persuasion in society is a vital part of human life. People have been guided by others throughout centuries through persuasive attitudes, actions, signs, and thoughts. Basically, individuals in a given group will be persuaded if they feel change will be for the entire group’s advantage. You may be familiar with utilitarianism and how the advantages and disadvantages of one person can significantly affect the entire group as a whole.

The same goes with persuasion, in the sense that if you are able to show inequity, people will mostly adhere to a problem-solving means, instead of being forced into deciding.

Weapons of Influence in Society

All weapons of influence can be applied to modern society. Persuasion in society still requires a variety of strategies, techniques, and approaches, especially since you are dealing with several people at a time. This may make it harder for you because it is very likely for different individuals in a society to have varying perceptions and views.

The most common is authority, wherein people are influenced by those they look up to, like leaders, heroes, and government figures. Social proof is another, where people follow what others in the same group are doing or thinking. Liking is when people easily get persuaded if they see things attractive to them or are to their advantage.

Scarcity is when people adhere to influence if it seems rare or unique. There is also reciprocation, in which individuals will allow themselves to be persuaded to return a favor or end suffering. Commitment and consistency is an honored agreement that may initially come with a motivator.

Persuasion in society acts in a way that lets individuals comply with the so-called standards of the group they belong to. They are more likely to be persuaded if they find benefits and improvement in their environment, which makes them feel useful and vital to their community. This greatly gives them a sense of security, decisiveness, and belongingness.

What matters more, the needs of society or the rights or indivduals?

society
Neverforever asked:

In an orderly dictatorship, the needs of society are met with what the western world has deemed cruel and unusual punishment. They have lower crime rates, but people (apparently) live in fear.

In democratic nations, we tend to value the rights of the individual more. I always hear about appaling things in the news, but the criminal can get off because their rights were violated.

Where do we draw the line?

I believe the rights of individuals are important, but the needs of society are equally important. If we could find a way to balance those two, I think the world could be a much better place.

But what are your views?

What is the difference between society and culture?

society
rhapsodizingmoments asked:

In history, these words are VERY commonly used, and I know that there is a distinct difference between society and culture, but I just can’t seem to pick up on it. I’ve asked my friends what the difference is, but they can’t seem to put it into words. Can anyone out there help me? And I’m not looking for three word answers either. If you could elaborate on exactly what you mean while you explain the difference, I’d really appreciate it. sometimes yahoo generates some crappy answers.

Anyone can look stuff up in the dictionary. I want the difference between society and culture explained in words that I can understand.
